Karaoke Etiquette for Newbies
70If you ever go to a karaoke bar it may all seem like a chaotic sideshow-mess with all of the people singing crazy songs while the crowd drinks and cheers wildly. But if you take a closer look, there is actually a whole inner-system of rules and regulations that governs most karaoke rooms. It might take a while for you to learn about what is appropriate in a karaoke room, but it will be worth your effort if you plan to spend any time in there on a regular basis. The weird thing about karaoke is that once you’ve tried it you will probably want to go back for more. So if an amateur singing career is in your plans you would do well to learn about the basics of karaoke etiquette. With a bit of trial and error, and a bit of patience, you just might find yourself being the king of karaoke in no time.
A lot of people joke about karaoke and don’t take it seriously, but many regular karaoke-goers treat it as a hobby. They like to have fun too, but it’s not a big joke to them. For this reason, the number one rule of karaoke etiquette is to be polite and respect the room itself. It’s fine to laugh and enjoy yourself, but resist the temptation to knock anyone’s singing. You will find that it is very bad form to mock people who don’t have tremendous singing ability, and you will definitely stand out if you do this. Remember that people have paid money and this is how they want to spend their time, so never ridicule them no matter how silly you think they are.
When you are in the crowd, it’s important to pay attention and not to talk over anyone’s singing. You’ll appreciate this when other people return the favour. And while you might need a few drinks to relax, you should never go up to sing while you are drunk. If you go up you should appreciate the chance to sing because there might be a long line-up and some people won’t get an opportunity. Some people like to go up with their friends to sing as a group, and if you choose to do this make sure it doesn’t degenerate into a messy display that is only entertaining to your group. And above all else, never try to use a fake name to sing more than your fair share of songs. The DJ will try to let everyone use the karaoke machine in a timely manner, but this can’t happen if you use deception to jump the queue.
As mentioned earlier, there are many people who take karaoke seriously. These are the people who go to the rooms quite frequently, and they usually have the talent to back up their status. You will run into a variety of personalities but it’s always best to be respectful as a rookie. So don’t act cocky or show off too much. If you are humble and generous towards other singers, that will actually take you much further than pure singing talent alone. In some cases a regular may have a favourite song that they always sing, so if you are aware of this don’t poach their song. Respect and privileges have to be earned and you can only do this be knowing how to conduct yourself. Karaoke is more popular than you might think as many people are investing in personal karaoke systems to supplement their home entertainments systems. Evidently, karaoke is not a joke and if you treat it with respect your enjoyment of the activity will increase dramatically.
