Common Skin Problems and What to do About them

By

Our skin is arguably the most important organ on our bodies. After all, is serves as the first line of defence between our bodies and the elements. Is there any other organ that is exposed to such a constant barrage of outside forces every day? It’s important to keep our skin as healthy and in order to do that it’s essential to know what can go wrong with it. Most common skin problems are perfectly treatable, but it’s important to recognize the symptoms and act before they get worse.

Sunburn – most people will experience at least one sunburn in their lifetimes. If you have ever gotten sunburn you’ll know how bad it can feel. You just get overwhelmed by this gross feeling of nausea while it’s impossible to touch the part of your body that got burned. Basically you feel like a cooked piece of meat and it’s hard to get on with your life until the symptoms go away. If you go out into the sun for any significant period of time, it’s always important to wear a good amount of sun screen. This is doubly true if you go to a place like the beach where the glare from the water can reflect back onto your skin. If your sunburn is serious enough, you should definitely consult your doctor for help. You will definitely be able to feel the difference between minor sunburn and one that needs medical help. Watch out for severe redness and stringy peeling, and check physical symptoms like blisters and headaches.

Eczema – Eczema is a raw itchy condition where your skin may appear red and flaky. Some factors that can trigger eczema include stress, allergic reactions, or exposure to soaps or skin care products that aggravate the skin. This condition is fairly common and if the itchiness gets to be too much, you should definitely see your doctor. As for non-prescription treatments, you can look for creams and ointments that contain cortisone.

Athlete’s Foot – this is a fungus that grows on your foot and loves to thrive in warm moist environments. You can catch this by exposure to other people’s shoes, contact with a gym floor, or just generally poor washing of the feet. Symptoms include a blistering of the feet marked with peeling and a dry cracked surface. In most cases, athlete’s foot can be treated with a topical anti-fungal cream.

Acne – acne can be a frustrating problem because it can come about through no fault of our own and take a while to treat. When it comes to how to get rid of acne, your best bet is to see your dermatologist depending on how serious it is. There are also many good over-the-counter medications you can try, but be careful of the side effects that may initially make your face peel or feel itchy. And remember, never pop your pimples or you risk making your overall acne worse. Acne can have deeper biological causes related to hormone production and hereditary factors so remember that when looking for a comprehensive treatment.

Wrinkles – wrinkles are a natural part of life, but they don’t have to come too early. To avoid wrinkles you should make sure to stay clear from sun tanning and smoking. Also make sure to drink plenty of water each day while using a good non-oil based moisturizer each day.
